How to reflect achievements in the resume

As soon as the applicants reach this point, many are lost and leave this section empty. But the employer wants the specialist he hires to be the best. Therefore, when a person says that he is just doing his job well, he gives up the vacancy to the more active and ready to advertise himself to the candidates.

Where to get achievements?
Even deciding to show his merits, the applicant often experiences difficulties. What should an office worker do if he simply conscientiously fulfills his duties without any problems, troubles and complaints? There are two ways you can solve this problem.

Method 1. Use the “effective” words: did not “do”, but “did”, did not “carry out”, but “carried out”, etc., that is, describe the completed processes. Even in a short period of work, something can be achieved: “During this period I have mastered such and such products / tools / lines of activity.” The main thing is to show an informal approach to fulfilling duties, willingness to solve problems to the end.

Method 2. Try to translate your results into numbers if possible. In most cases, you can at least roughly calculate the amount of work done (the number of transactions concluded, presentations issued, magazine issues, etc.), your growth compared to the previous employee or existing standards, and a percentage increase in profit on your site.

Andrei Mesechko, PR director of the recruiting company Pride Consulting Group, advises: “Try to use numbers wherever possible. This will not only give your words weight and visibility, but also “break” the text: the look always lingers on the numbers, clings to them, respectively, the resume has more chances to attract attention. It is important to remember that any data should be supported by achievement tools.

For example, the head of the sales department made some changes to the work of the subordinate unit, redistributing responsibilities between employees. Accordingly, he can reflect this achievement in the resume using the phrase: “Developed a new structure for the sales department” or “During my work, the level of total sales increased by 48% per year”. In the first case, the tool is shown, but the result is not shown, and in the second, on the contrary, the recruiter will see only unconfirmed data. Combine both phrases into one and get the achievement: “Thanks to the new structure of the department that I developed, the level of total sales grew by 48% over the year.”

Responsibilities or achievements?
Andrei Mesechko: “For example, a person opened an office branch from scratch. What is it? Achievement or obligation? On the one hand - achievement, since we see the final result, but on the other - the employee simply did the job for which he was hired. What is the achievement then?

To open a branch, it was necessary to solve a large number of different problems: technical, bureaucratic, legal, etc. And if among them there were complex, non-standard ones, then we must write about their successful solution. If a person says that he “solved the problem with outdoor advertising”, “entered into an agreement with a security company, choosing the best option for the price / quality ratio”, this will be more a description of the responsibilities. But if at some stage he markedly reduced costs or did something ahead of schedule - here you can already talk about achievements. Such bright pages will distinguish it among other applicants who possessed the same functionality. ”

HR Director of the Deltaplan advertising group Natalya Konysheva adds: “A candidate for a secretary’s vacancy should not write in the achievements section“ operational execution of manager’s instructions ”or“ collecting and working with documents ”, as these are the direct duties of such an employee. But the reduction of the company's expenses on stationery by 30% and the simultaneous preservation of proper quality is an achievement. ”

purpose
Describing your achievements, you should not forget about such an important thing as the goal. The applicant needs to understand that each line in the resume should emphasize the presence of the required qualities, his compliance with this vacancy.

So, if your task is to build a career vertically, that is, you want to get a leadership position one level higher than the one you occupied in the previous place, then as achievements you need to indicate independent strategic decisions, leadership experience, planning, filling a manager’s position, etc. For example, if you claim to be a publishing editor, although before that you worked only as a journalist, then indicate in your achievements that you yourself have chosen topics for publications, edited texts, coordinated work colleagues when performing some tasks. If you were a literary editor before, specify that your activity was not only about word processing: you gave ideas to journalists, helped them search for reference materials, tracked sources on a topic, controlled the deadlines for publications and resolved conflict situations.

Those who aspire to horizontal growth, change or expansion of functionality, in the list of achievements can show that they were able to cope with tasks that go beyond the usual activities. In other words, your achievements described in the resume should show the dynamics of the career that you are planning.

Olga Kochergina, Head of the High Technology and Telecommunications Practice of the recruiting company MarksMan, advises: “The most important rule is not to write a resume in one day. Moreover, even if you don’t plan to change your job now, sooner or later such a need will arise, so try to record all the successful milestones of your career. ” Have you received the certificate as the best employee of the year? Record this in the online resume by setting the visibility settings to "Not visible to anyone." The operational fixation of your achievements will not take you much time, and when you decide to look for a new job, you will not have to painfully recall all the stages of your professional development.
